What is Jamu?

Jamu originated from Indonesia as a herbal medicinal drink made from natural ingredients. One of the main ingredients is Turmeric, which contains a substance called curcumin. Curcumin, once activated, is said to have many amazing properties such as anti-inflammation, antioxidant boost, antiseptic and antibacterial. What a remarkable plant to be able to provide so many benefits.

Now the tricky thing I found was how to get a daily dose of curcumin and how to easily take it. After all, to activate the curcumin you need to add pepper to it and then cook it for some time. Then I discovered Jamu (a medicinal turmeric drink), found a recipe and made it.

After my first batch I decided to see on how it will benefit me after my Jiu Jitsu training. As a person in my mid-thirties, Jiu Jitsu training is very intense and recovery post training is often the thing that either exhausts me or keeps me away from doing consecutive training sessions. To counter this, I’d take BCAA’s which are artificially made and I’d hope that the ingredients used were safe.

After drinking this bright orange turmeric beverage, the results were remarkable. I felt like my recovery was 50-60% better than without it. Additionally, I did not use any artificial BCAA’s that I used to take to try to improve post workout recovery. I felt as though it had improved my overall muscle soreness and I had energy to get up and go again in the morning.

With the threat of Covid-19 and a lot of talk about a vaccine, in my opinion I’m not giving any hope of a vaccine being made given there hasn't been one created for this type of virus before. The only feasible back-up plan to a vaccine is to boost my own immune system. With twice daily mediation practice, clean eating, daily exercise, and a twice daily dose of Turmeric Jamu, this is one of the best ways to boost my immune system.

The drink takes a couple of goes to get used to its flavour, because after all, I don’t think I’ve ever drank a beverage made from turmeric. But after the first drink, I went back for a second and now that I’ve become used to it, it’s a refreshing beverage that I now look forward to every day for its taste rather than just its benefits. Drinking it chilled is best.
